Stages of Literacy Development:
Stage 1: Beginning Literacy
Grade Range: Pre K-K
Food Groups: Reading Comprehension Strategies, Motivation for Literacy
Activity Description: Each student creates a bracelet using a green bead for the beginning, a red bead for the ending and 3 or more other beads for the middle. As students retell a story, they slide a bead from left to right for each story component.

Improving Reading Comprehension through Questioning

Grade Range: 2nd-3rd
Food Groups: Reading Comprehension Strategies
Activity Description: With a guided reading group, a question wheel is spun before reading. Students answer a question just by looking at the front cover of the book and justify their answer using text clues. Students then read the first couple of pages independently while making note of any questions they have on sticky notes. Students place there sticky note questions on the question chart according to what type of question it is (who, what, when, why, where, how) and share what they were wondering.

This activity allows students to engage with text in a small group and independently. By generating and responding to questions, students develop a deeper understanding of the text. Using the question wheel before reading the story serves as a warm up to the students independently using the question chart and encourages students to use the text for clues and gathering information to build comprehension.
